Sieber agate is a glassy, synthetic form of obsidian that is a byproduct of ancient copper smelting. It is found in the Oberhütte slag locality in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and is estimated to be around 1,400 years old.

  • Composition
  • Sieber agate is a copper slag, which is a granular or lump byproduct of the copper smelting process. Copper slag is typically black or red-brown in color, and has a specific gravity of 2.8 to 3.8.
  • Formation
  • During copper smelting, impurities float on the molten metal and become slag. When quenched in water, the slag forms angular granules.
  • Uses
  • Sieber agate is sometimes used in jewelry and as a gift or birthstone. Some believe that Sieber agate can help with telepathic skills, protect travelers, and relieve eye problems.
